LP's (long playing records): The Scoop
In Ethan's museum, these are the most collected items. The curator became interested in record collecting back in 2014, when he saw one at Marshall's. To his surprise, records are still manufactured in bulk, as they have become more and more popular in recent years among younger people. LP's provide better sound quality than their predecessors, the 78's, as well as longer playing time and higher durability (lightweight, so they don't shatter if dropped). The format was introduced in 1948 by Columbia records; initially they were mono (one channel of sound), and then in 1958 stereo sound was introduced on LP's. The format was the most popular way to listen to music at home throughout the mid to late-twentieth century, until the CD (compact disc) was introduced, whose sales far surpassed those of LP's by 1988. The format still survives, and its niche market continues to grow, as shown by the sale of over 9,200,000 records in the US in 2014.
